D-Day Memorial Hall hosts its first “Southwick Speaks” event
Southwick D-Day Memorial Hall was the venue for the first “Southwick Speaks” series of events featuring Brigadier Baverstock CBE, Yeoman Usher of the Black Rod. The subject of this fascinating event was “British Parliament and the Role of Ceremony”.
Brigadier Neil Baverstock CBE
Ceremony is an integral part of the British parliamentary system, and many of us are familiar with such as the State Opening of Parliament, State Visits and the Prorogation and Dissolution of Parliament, which occurs before a general election.
There are also far more modest ceremonies – from announcing the results of Divisions, the passage of bills between the Houses and the daily Speaker’s and Lord Speaker’s processions.
We are probably not aware of the range, significance and history behind these ceremonies, some of which date as far back as the 13th Century. In his talk, Brigadier Neil Baverstock CBE delved into the role that ceremony plays inn celebrating and preserving the heritage, values, identity and continuity of Parliament as an institution.
More unique and compelling events are planned in the future including Henry Montgomery, tales from the life of his grandfather “Monty”. James Holland, historian, author and broadcaster is set to present “Cassino: the Italian Campaign – the Forgotten Army.
